It is important to be aware of the effects diabetes can have on the eyes. High blood sugar from diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the retina, a condition known as diabetic retinopathy. Many people don't notice symptoms until the disease is advanced and harder to treat. That is why it is important to have a diabetic eye exam yearly to monitor any changes in the retina. If you are newly diagnosed as a diabetic, it is important to wait at least 6 weeks before scheduling a diabetic eye exam to allow your blood sugar to become stable. If your blood sugar is unstable, your glasses prescription could change drastically once the blood sugar is stable, which could cause you to need a new eye exam to get the correct prescription.
